Mapacho: Shamanic Peruvian Tobacco

mapacho - shamanic tobacco

Mapacho is a plant-Teacher of the Amazon.

Indigenous people refer to this plant as tabaco or mapacho, although it has little to do with the tobacco that our society uses for smoking.

Mapacho is one of the most powerful Teacher plants of the Amazon jungle, possessing incredible healing power.

The use of mapacho and its properties

Mapacho is often called the grandfather, the ancestor from which all other plants gradually emerged. It was this plant that indigenous people used in the pipe of peace. When an important decision had to be made, before anyone started speaking, they would all take a puff of tobacco from the pipe. This ritual served as a tuning in to speaking the truth “from the heart,” and the group listening with their hearts.

Mapacho intensifies its effect when interacting with fire. Therefore, it is traditionally used in the form of smoke or brew prepared over fire.

Mapacho cleanses and protects space. It envelops a person with tranquility and care, extracts them from the mazes of the mind, and reveals the shortest paths to the fundamental aspects of life: love for the Earth, body awareness, perceiving reality without distortions.

The locals call the spirit of Mapacho a protector. It helps navigate through difficult situations, shields against harmful influences and aggressive entities, and provides support during journeys to other realms. Mapacho is the main companion in Ayahuasca and San Pedro ceremonies. It prepares the space and creates a protective dome for safe plant work.

Psychological and physical effects of mapacho

From a psychological standpoint, mapacho eliminates fears that hinder living a normal life. During the exploration of fears, mapacho can clarify their causes and gently show a more effective response. It may also, for instance, issue challenges by immersing a person in a frightening situation, allowing them to deeply understand the nature of fear and learn to utilize it correctly.

Body cleansing and treatment of various illnesses

On a physical level, mapacho purifies the body from toxins and foreign energies, restoring the lungs and circulatory system. It is highly effective in relieving asthma, clearing the remnants of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases from the lungs, and even tuberculosis.

Mapacho in Ayahuasca retreats

In Ayahuasca retreats, we perform Mapacho cleanses to prepare individuals for their encounter with Ayahuasca and to cleanse superficial energetic layers that accumulate in urban environments and daily life. Mapacho, in the form of smoking and brews for bathing, helps cleanse the body, provides additional strength and protection for deeper work with other plants, and calms the mind.

The work was amazing. Ayahuasca helped pull out the most stuck traumas that I didn’t even know about, remove the blocks that prevented me from walking through life with confidence and calm, being truly alive, being myself. I could not achieve such a result by working with a psychologist (I am not at all belittling their work now); in a retreat, the work occurs with great intensity and efficiency.
