Rapé - Sacred Snuff Tobacco of the Amazon

What is Rapé?

Rapé (also known as "hapé" or "hape") is a sacred snuff tobacco prepared from a mixture of powdered mapacho (Nicotiana rustica) and various medicinal plants.

Mapacho is one of the most powerful healing plants of the rainforest, along with ayahuasca. In rapé blends, mapacho is always the "main" ingredient, setting the direction for the work, while other plants support and complement it.

Rapé recipes may vary among different tribes and shamans, each having their unique blend of plants and tobacco. Some common ingredients used in rapé include tree bark, leaves, seeds, and ashes of specific plants known for their healing properties.

In a rapé ceremony, it is typically administered through a special pipe called "kuripe" or "tipi," which allows the user to self-administer the snuff into the nostrils.

The term "rapé" translates to "ancient dust" or "divine snuff tobacco" in the languages of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon.

Historical Significance and Legends

Rapé holds an important place in the culture of indigenous peoples of the Amazon. Throughout the centuries, tribes such as Yawanawa, Katukina, and Nukini have used it as a sacred tool for spiritual practices and healing rituals. Legends associated with rapé describe its origin as a gift from the Spirits, who taught the shamans how to prepare and use it to connect people with the divine realm and higher consciousness.

Health and Spiritual Benefits

Physical Benefits

Rapé primarily affects the head area. It clears the nasal passages, alleviates nasal congestion, and relieves headaches and migraines.

The effects of rapé vary significantly depending on the plants used in its composition.

Emotional and Spiritual Benefits

Rapé enhances concentration, clarity, and mindfulness. It helps cleanse negative energies and promotes a stronger connection with nature and the spiritual realm. Rapé can induce deep states of self-analysis and expanded consciousness.

How to use Rapé

When administering rapé, it is desirable to engage the "energetic" organs: it is blown from the abdomen to the crown or back of the head. When blowing rapé, a person brings their own energy, so it is important to do it with a complete cessation of internal dialogue and with pure intention. If you are unsure about someone else's purity of intention, it is better to refrain from their participation and use the "tipi" pipe for self-administration.

Rapé can be used both in ayahuasca retreats and in everyday life.

In ayahuasca retreats, when necessary, we use both traditional rapé from Brazilian tribes and our own compositions depending on the goals. Well-chosen rapé complements the work in the retreat in the desired direction.

In everyday life, rapé can help maintain and expand the direction established during the retreat.

Due to its focus on clearing the head, rapé is particularly relevant in cities, as the head area is subjected to the strongest negative influences and attacks due to informational noise.

Rapé is capable of neutralizing recent "energetic" pollution and clearing the consequences of stress, and with regular use, it gradually removes old toxins accumulated in the head throughout life. The mind gradually becomes clearer and more focused.
